Video BlogPosted: 2012-February-12 Song: Tasuzin – “Hoh”
Finally! I’ve got some of my work ready to share for this blog, and though it may be only 15.5 seconds long, I’m happy with how it came out.

Meshuggah leaked a track off of their new album Koloss yesterday, so there was no question in my mind as to what I was going to post today.
As for the song, it’s brutal and slow with a tight groove and a hypnotic build. It’s more straightforward that most Meshuggah tracks, but it’s good to hear them continue to change things up as their career progresses.
I ran across this track today while researching a very obscure genre called Spitbass, which is a sub-genre of Speedbass, which is a hybrid of gabber, DnB, dub, and instrumental hip-hop. As I am fond of all four of those genres, I felt it was worth checking some songs out.
This song in particular was a complete and total mindstack, and the 8-bit section at 0:47 is absolutely choice.

Stella Luna’s album Stargazer has been my soundtrack for going to work over the past few weeks, and the first track on the EP entitled “Change” is the perfect opening track for zoning out to while waiting for the oncoming wash of guitars to arrive.
Chances are good that I’ll post the entirety of this four-track shoegaze EP over time, because the whole album is tremendous.
Posted: 2012-February-07 Song: LSD – “Phobia”
The first song to break from the “M” pattern, LSD’s “Phobia” is a technoid tune I stumbled upon during my drum and bass exploration last year. I was inspired enough by this song to dabble in the technoid genre, but nothing really came of it at the time. However, my current industrial DnB/techstep project certainly shares more than a few similarities with this song.
Also, the frantic nature of this song certainly inspires movement, so it’s good for working out to.
Posted: 2012-February-06 Song: My Bloody Valentine – “You Made Me Realise”
In a continuation of posting bands that start with “M”, this time I’m going with another favorite of mine, My Bloody Valentine. I’ve written about this song before over at Good-Evil, but it’s always good to bring a classic out of the woodwork.
While I generally prefer the Loveless-era work, the aptly-titled holocaust section of this song (which starts around 1:40) can certainly be seen as a precursor to that sound. Granted, the sound was tempered and made more melodic and palatable on Loveless, but there’s something really engrossing about the middle part of the song – especially when it’s done live and stretched to over 15 minutes.
Posted: 2012-February-05 Song: Mira – “Space”
I discovered Mira in the wake of the big shoegaze kick I got on in late 2008. I picked up both of their earlier albums (Mira & Apart) in March of 2009 and this song has stuck with me since then.
It’s the only remotely aggressive track on the Apart album and I find it to be a really good song, if not their best. It has some really propulsive drum and rhythm work, while the guitars create the atmosphere and the vocalist gives the song a haunting and melancholy feel.
I ran across this song in October of 2011 while looking for some more inspiration for Thunderspell, which was a short-lived drum and bass project of mine. Seeing as I’ve just started another project in the drum and bass vein, this song has become relevant to my interests again.
The beats are heavy and fast, the pads intertwine well with the vocal samples, and there’s this dirty groove that propels the song forward really well. Maztek’s also got some other pretty choice DnB tunes that should be showing up here sooner than later.
This is the song that I was going to put up yesterday, as it’s been one of my favorite songs for quite some time. In fact, Meshuggah’s been a favorite of mine since about 2000 or so.
I did have Destroy Erase Improve before that time, but outside of enjoying the sheer brutality of “Future Breed Machine”, I didn’t really understand the album. It took a community college class called “The History of Jazz” to really open my ears properly to Meshuggah. While I took the class in late 1998, it didn’t dawn on me until after I got my Associate degree to check out Meshuggah again. I believe the thought that came to mind was “doesn’t Meshuggah have jazz influences?”
To make a “cool story bro” less story, I picked up Chaosphere in May of 2000 and this song has melted my face ever since. Plus, the video is hilarious!
Posted: 2012-February-01 Song: Morbid Angel – “Destructos vs. the Earth / Attack” (featuring the Soul Train Gang)
I wanted to start this video blog with my favorite video (which is also my favorite song), but I found out about the unfortunate passing of Don Cornelius (the host of Soul Train) today, so I decided to post this video in tribute.
Sure, it’s not an earnest video and I can’t say I much like the song (Morbid Angel fell off after Formulas, IMO), but the combination of the two is quite amusing and laughter always helps in times of sorrow.
RIP Mr. Cornelius – peace, love, and soul to you.
