Turning Thirty
As of Thursday the 10th, I’ve reached the age of 30.  I know this age brings either hope or dread to some folks, but I was on the hope train before it ever showed up.  The reason for that is that I had a fairly life-changing event occur in late October, which has given me plans and goals until the age of 35.

That life changing event?  It was something so basic as clicking on a link to a blog post.  It was a link to Steve Pavlina’s blog entitled [10 Reasons You Should Never Get a Job].  He covers some great concepts in there, and while I already had the general gist of this down, this post of his (and many others) have lead me to really tune up multiple facets of my life.

Some examples:
• I’ve gone from getting up at 5:30 AM to getting up at 4 AM
• I use that extra morning time to work on my projects
• I’ve almost entirely recoded the [Concatenation Records] site to W3C standards
• I’ve learned lots of new things to help tune up all of my sites
• I’ve started this blog and have a regular posting schedule of MWF
• I’ve signed up with Technorati and YH3T3KXB4M76 is my verification code
• I set up an RSS feed (that I still need to link to everything)
• I’ve made some long-term plans and have the confidence to act upon them

In essence, I’ve gone from being driven to being extremely driven.

Focusing That Drive

Now I’ve never been too much of a slacker (maybe in my teens), and while I spent my 20s working hard on projects, I did them without any sort of focus or long-term vision.  I’d crank out album after album and that was good enough for me.  I’d never really sit down and question, “I’m doing all of these projects, but what are they doing for me?”

I’ve always joked that I’m married to my music, but it’s not much of a marriage when I’m putting so much into it and getting little back in return.  I certainly get satisfaction from the work and having a finished product in my hands is a thrill, yet that’s usually where it ends.  I’ve been working on changing that since late October, and the ball is beginning to roll.  I could elaborate, but that’s a subject for a future blog post.

Jettisoning Time Wasters

If I want a productive and successful life (which I do), I’m having to learn how to manage my time better.  I was already pretty good at it, but now I’m getting even better.  I have to look to where my time is going and if it’s being used in the best way possible.

Before you wonder, I’m still a gamer, but gaming is generally what I do when I’ve been working too much and need a brain dump.  I used to game after a long day at the office, but now I use that time to work on web projects or read.

Considering my web projects are getting to a more maintainable level and my stack of books is getting ridiculous, I’ll definitely be doing more of the latter in the near future.  Reading is going to be doubly important since I received a copy of [The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, Third Edition by Charlie Papazian] for my birthday (thanks Mom!) and have stated my desire in a previous blog post to begin homebrewing next year.

All Work and No Play Makes Jason a Dull Boy

It occurs to me that I’m over 500 words in and I haven’t really said anything about what happened in my 20s.  That goes to show that I’ve had a polar shift in attitudes, since I used to be all about clinging to my past when I was younger – up until two or three years ago.

I felt that the only things that had meaning were in the past and the future wasn’t important.  Now, the future is exciting and filled with opportunity that’s just waiting to be seized, whereas the past is something to learn from and reminisce about.

I was going to tack said reminiscing to the tail end of this post, but ten years is a lot of material to cover and I need a little more time to get my thoughts and memories together.  I’ll have that post up on Wednesday.

To sum up, I’m excited to be 30!  It’s a good age marker to work from.  It’s the beginning of a decade of grand achievement waiting to be seized, and my hands are ready to grasp.
