| Nevar Say Die! Compilation, Volume Three |
This compilation has been six months in the making and was finally released yesterday. It’s comprised of 38 tracks spanning two discs, with over two hours of material. I have a special interest in it as I managed the project, created a little of the art, and recorded seven of the 38 songs on the albums under six of my solo projects and one of my group collaborations.
Disc One – Facemelter
This is the more metallic disc, though calling it a “strictly metal” disc would be a fallacy, as there are a fair share of other genres represented here; all of which have some sort of caustic temperament which would be akin to facemelting.
Track 01 – temp sound solutions – Memphis Will Be Laid to Waste A rampaging metalcore assault from the get go with only sparse periods of reprieve. Distortion has been liberally applied to almost everything, adding even more chaos to the mix and adding to the intensity of the song.
Track 02 – Swimfail – Vermin A A driving slab of alternative metal with nu-metal touches that takes feelings of angst and crosses them with hard-charging rhythm. It’s a difficult task to find yourself not headbanging to the chorus section.
Track 03 – Skummel Maske – Fool’s Momentum An instrumental metal attack that certainly does have a momentum going for it. Lush keyboards are crossed with a heavy rhythm guitar attack to give this song a perpetual sense of motion.
Track 04 – M-H – Tears (KoF 1999) A soulful, yet metallic rendition of a quite melodic piece. Excellently executed guitar melodies and leads with crisp production along with a driving rhythm make this track an absolute treat to listen to.
Track 05 – XMark – Head Injury The heyday of 1980s thrash is immediately called to mind as this song begins and picks up speed. The melodic acoustic intro becomes punctuated by an absolute thrash attack which gives way to skillful melodies and leads that add a lot of dynamics to this song.
Track 06 – tibone (featuring Ryan King) – Two of a Kind A love song with a serious hard rock edge. The vocals soar over the top of a deliberate rhythm attack and a classic hard rock solo adds a lot to the proceedings. This is a call to rock and a call to love.
Track 07 – Wizard Combat – Pizza Party! A perfect storm of noise, silliness, and catchiness. From buzzing guitars to chiptune melodies, it’s a raucous earworm of delight. I want my Wizard Combat with sausage and pepperonis… and pickles.
Track 08 – Recreational Episiotomy – Overpass What begins as a funk rock ditty ends as an onslaught. Then it’s over before it really began. Sixteen seconds of sheer splendor.
Track 09 – Scull Shoals – Prypiat Layers of sound in the upper and lower registers are put to a beat at an oppressive tempo, giving this song an absolutely massive feel. The highs obliterate and the lows crush as this song thunders along, then fades into the ether.
Track 10 – Zud – Decay Crunching guitars put to a pummeling beat give this song a lurching feel. Atmospheric layers of guitars are added to give the song even more eeriness and toxicity before the acoustic reprieve, which still hints at what’s to come. What comes is a thunderous crescendo of destruction with howls from the netherworld beckoning the listener towards the end.
Track 11 – BBQ ppl – I saved the queen and all I got was this lousy death sentence A driving chiptune backbone with layers of atmospheric guitars and chip melodies that propel this haunting, yet oddly positive piece along. These elements suit the song very well, as they make it quite an intriguing listen.
Track 12 – Concrete Mutant – Seasick A churning monstrosity of a song rooted in the industrial and doom metal genres; it’s reminiscent to being stuck at sea during a particularly nasty storm. Ugly in the best way possible.
Track 13 – Cyanidic Rapture – Narcotic Interlude Erratic sound effects layered with a bouncy bassline and sparse beat give this song a sense of unease. It gives a feeling of something unexpected beyond control that’s just around the corner.
Track 14 – Hemostat – eaSy iNvaDer A bizarre noise assault on the senses, this track adds to the unease that the previous one has built. Distortions panning around the stereo spectrum and popping up out of nowhere are disconcerting and appealing at the same time.
Track 15 – Voices of Epic Fail – Outlaws Without Law (Gun.Smoke) Grindcore crossed with electronic hardcore with chiptune flourishes. An absolutely relentless track that is well suited for outlaws without law.
Track 16 – TheoConfidor – Digit Game A superb mesh of keyboards and heavy rhythm guitar give this song a multitude of sonic qualities throughout. Each section evokes a different feel, yet they’re all blended together very well. Very nice!
Track 17 – ansgaros – Falling Apart The perfect closer for this disc, it brings a sorrowful but upbeat conclusion to an hour of great music. The keyboards and rhythm guitar work very well when used together and really shine when used separately. The vocals fit the song and certainly give the listener a sense that the protagonist of the song is indeed falling apart.
Disc Two – Rumpshaker
This is definitely the more danceable disc of the two. While not every track is going to make you want to jump up and get down, they should all at least have you bobbing your head along.
Track 01 – neu cetera (featuring darmock and geotarkus) – The Secret of Manga: Part A – 21 Jumpstick, Part B – No Food ‘Til You Dance Definitely the most epic song of the collection, this song will have you dancing it off in no time An eight plus minute tribute to 1980s funk and Hong Kong cinema, it never lets up and should plaster a giant smile to your face. This song is amazing every time.
Track 02 – Skies of Cyanide – Inundation (The Ebb and Flow) This song has a very smooth and steady groove to it and is complemented well with the textural synths. The front half of the song is ethereal; the back half is more ominous. A six plus minute track that flows by like rapids.
Track 03 – naz – Pinned Down This track is heavy on the backbeat with a giant bass sound. Lots of melodic elements show up to keep things moving along, and the different textures of all the elements work together very well. This song is smooth, with a capital smoo.
Track 04 – The Sticky Situation – NSD3 A hard driving electronic rhythmic attack with chiptune elements that blend well with the big drum sounds. An enjoyable listen all around!
Track 05 – temp sound solutions – Shifty Melodiez The drums are easily the focus of this song, and the slight melodic touches along with the sound effects blend together very well with the propelling drum beat. An intriguing listen, to be sure.
Track 06 – The Buttfuxtables – Settin’ the Woods on Fire A song that makes you want to stomp around and rock out for its twenty second duration. Short and sweet!
Track 07 – Jesse Bishop – 7th Loop of the Vortex A song with a very strong surf rock vibe; it has a bit of a whimsical feel to it. The vocals work very well with the song and the guitar and drum interplay give it a rock solid foundation.
Track 08 – weener and Tender Lad (featuring Madge) – One Man’s Pet A song with voluminous and lush production, it builds well when it’s quiet and rocks hard when it’s not. The darker male vocals contrast well with the lighter female vocals.
Track 09 – Theophagus – To Be Played at the Wedding A song of love that should bring a smile to your face and have you bobbing your head along to the jaunty rhythm.
Track 10 – Satellite Bros. – 1477 – A POOP ODYSSEY A song that rocks hard and fast with soaring guitar lines; it has the feel of something that would be well-suited for beginning a journey of epic proportions.
Track 11 – Xoc – Double Dribble – Halftime Show The interplay of all the elements of this song are great and they sound fantastic together. A short track with a 1970’s TV sitcom vibe that leaves you wanting more.
Track 12 – cacomistle – komasa kanto A rocking track with a bit of a surf feel that makes a delightful turn into left field about halfway through when the guitars lose their mind and the samples take over.
Track 13 – NESTERBABIES!! – Contra – Alien’s Lair An absolutely brilliant interpretation of this song. I’m seriously left speechless.
Track 14 – Xoc – Pacman Plus – Intermission Twelve seconds of upbeat rock. Enjoyable for its duration!
Track 15 – The Clones of Bruce Lee – things I hate A song with a strong keyboard presence that’s driven by the rhythm section. It’s a fairly sparse song but all of the elements work well. Oddly enough, it gives me the feel of a song in a spaghetti western without sounding like one at all.
Track 16 – I Love Lamp – Never Say Lamp An electronic track that builds tension very well and unleashes upon the listener a driving beat and chiptune melodies before it’s over.
Track 17 – Wizwars – I Am the Wizard A straight-up chiptune that definitely uses the medium to its fullest. It rocks hard and has well done melodies throughout that are interspersed with well-used octave hits.
Track 18 – Mystic Nova – The Violent Cycle A highly syncopated chiptune with melodies that show up out of nowhere and disappear just as fast, while the rhythm stays steady throughout.
Track 19 – Bit_Rat vs. MC Fen – Do I Look Like A Guy Who Wants to Play Doubles? A rhythmic chiptune with a great rap flow over the top. It has an extremely strong rhythmic backbeat and nice melodic flourishes while the rap weaves its way in and out of the song with ease.
Track 20 – Zio and TEH LOLZ – Cymbalata Substitutionon A chiptune that starts out rather haunting and builds into a hard rock feel. It’ll keep your head bobbing through to the time it builds up the dissonance by layering the intro and the hard rock chip. The tension is built extremely well and relieved by returning to the hard rock section and fading out. Nice!
Track 21 – Amaranthine Skies – Elemental This is a song with very lush synths and strong rhythms that propel things along. The melodies and bass take the front position while the droning guitars are relegated to the background, yet they add the atmosphere that they need to. It’s a very airy piece with an extremely ambient outro.
Overview
I know some of the descriptions are a little more descriptive than others (mainly the ones for my own songs), but all in all this is quite an impressive collection of music, which could only come from [The Shizz].
