I’m not sure what’s going on any more.  I’ve changed my mind on projects so many times that my head is spinning from it.  After launching a new project this weekend, it’s already lost its resonance.  I’m leaning towards rebooting Thunderspell because I like the name and already have the social media sites set up, but I just don’t know.

I know what I’m trying to get my sound to sound like, but I just can’t find a foothold.  I think I need to step away from things for a while and just play some games and write some tunes on the guitar – worry about the other work later.

So, I’m going to stop the blog and the video blog because my interests are being stretched a little too much and I need to reassess my priorities.  I’ll keep updating the Xbox 360 Achievements page because that’s the hotbed of activity here at the site, but I’m signing off for the foreseeable future.

I’m coming in a little late on this as I’ve been working on finishing up a song for yet another project, but this one is rather abstract and will let me finish a song in a day or less if need be.

I’ve been known for letting songs breathe and wander for extended periods, but this project is the exact opposite of that.  It was inspired by a genre called “spitbass”, which has three rules.  One, the track must be 8khz, 8-bit, and mono.  Two, the track must be between 14 and 16 seconds long.  Three, the song should have a short title.

I’m breaking the first rule because the whole reason for the low bitrate tracks is because of the limitations of a 3.5” floppy disk.  Considering that floppies are an outdated technology and rather incompatible with today’s computers, I’m not going to worry about that.  The first almost complete song (which should go online tomorrow) is a whopping 2.6 MB, so it’s pretty tiny anyway.

I will be following the latter two rules, and I’m going to try to reign my songs in right around the 15.5 second mark – 15 seconds for the body of the song, .250 seconds for spacing between tracks, and .250 seconds for any fadeout that needs to occur.  Definitely a lot more concise than a 40 second fadeout.

As for the sound of the songs, they’re going to be a blend of speedbass (which is a combo of gabber, dnb, dub, and hip-hop), spitbass (the same, but more condensed), technical metal, and grindcore.  The first song is fast, technical (but not metal), and pretty heavy on the bass (dub).  I’ll likely be adding live instrumentation to some songs, and perhaps even some vocals.  Granted, with the length of the tracks, I’m going to be reciting haikus, but that’s cool.

This is good for me now, as it gives me a quick and concise outlet to crank out tunes.  As my other projects continue to evolve and become more complex, I can come back to this one and hammer out a tune in comparatively no time at all.  Instant music!  Just heat in the microwave and it’s ready to go!

Speaking of which, I should go to bed.  A new song will be ready sometime on Sunday, and I’ll be posting it on the video blog.  Until then!

I’ll try to keep it short tonight, as I’ve got some industrial drum and bass tunage that I’d like to work on before calling it a night.  In fact, I may be keeping it short for the foreseeable future, as there’s a lot of music that I’m really eager to get to work on.

The two projects are all ready to go, and all that’s left is to start recording.  It’s nice to be back to actually wanting to record instead of forcing (well, gently nudging) myself to get a song done every month.  I even fell off that wagon because my heart wasn’t in it.  All it took was a change in sleep schedule and BAM, creativity city come alive.

So, I’ve got my industrial drum and bass project for the weekdays (or on the weekends if I’m so inclined) and my self-described “experimental ambient doomgaze djent-hop” project for the weekends.  Both projects have formulas, but said formulas are abstract enough that the songs shouldn’t sound too similar, though the songs for each project won’t be completely different from each other either.

I’m tempted to get cracking on some more project creation, but I think it’s best if I hold off on that until I get a few tracks cranked out for each of the projects and see how they’re faring.  You know, hold off any new projects until next year or so.

With that, I’m off to make some industrial drum and bass.  SMELL THE BUYRATE!  Back on Saturday (maybe).  Probably.

I missed blogging on Saturday because I was hanging out with my friend Eric for most of the day.  We went to the Another Castle retro gaming store in Edmonds so he could finish up his Super Nintendo game collection, then did some thrift and pawn shop hopping.  I found a couple of CDs I’ve been looking for as well as some games (360 and otherwise).  My thrift store hunting streak has been pretty barren as of late, so it was nice to actually find some things.

After our thrift store adventures, we went back to Eric’s, got some pizza, and watched the UFC with about 15 other people.  The apartment was extremely crammed, but somehow we all fit in there and watched some fights.  The card was decent enough, though only one fight on the main card didn’t go to a decision.  All in all, I had a lot of fun and was a little too blitzed on beers to remember to do a blog that night.  Whoops!

I enjoyed watching the Super Bowl yesterday, but what has really been preoccupying my time is music.  The music bug is back with a vengeance and I’ve been formulating different ways of approaching writing, recording, sound generation – it’s all been a big blur.  Thankfully, I’ve been writing most of my ideas down.

As for projects, it’s back down to the two that I finished figuring out the sound for on Thursday and Friday (respectively).  The Thursday one is my main project that will require lots of recording and mixing, and I’ve also decided to use that for my video game covers too, as the project affords more versatility than just a strictly shoegaze project.  I’m looking to get all Good Vibrations and Loveless with this project and incorporate whatever I can to make it sound unique.

The Friday project is basically an industrial drum and bass project, which will be very challenging to listen to.  I’m not quite sure why I’m doing a project like that, but I guess I still have some harshness to my musical nature that I need to expel.  The Thursday project will have some heavy guitars, but they’re more for atmosphere and percussion than aggression.  Actually, the Friday project won’t have any guitars for the time being, though I may add some as the project evolves.

That said, I need to get back to work on creating drum samples for the Friday project and hopefully get some tunes up before too long.  I’ll try to remember to blog on Wednesday with some progress updates, but I may just work.  If nothing else, I’ll update the video blog by then.  Until Wednesday!

Well, here I am, new month, new look to the site, new section on the site, and three new musical projects beyond the one I was talking about last time!  I guess the change in sleep schedule took like a moth to flame, because my creative spark has been reignited and is now a raging inferno.

The three new projects?  Well, one isn’t new, but it’s only got one song to its name and has been dormant for over five years.  Another is under my own name and I’m going to try to do some songs that I can translate to a live setting on my own.

The third is one I can work on and complete songs any day of the week.  Setting up all the gear and recording is rather time consuming, so it makes it hard to do during the week.  My weekends have been pretty busy as of late too, which also makes recording difficult.  Suffice it to say, it will be wholly programmed and will be some sort of cross between industrial and dnb.  I’m thinking about trying to incorporate some chip sounds into it too, but I’m not sure how to make that work yet.

It’s crazy how I keep coming up with new ideas for projects and I’m perfectly happy with the ideas I’ve already come up with, so apparently I’ve got a flood of creativity that needs expressing before I go banana.  I think I’m going to go the route wherein I keep my projects relatively static, and if I want to veer off into a new direction, I’ll start up another project.

All of the projects I want to do are pretty well sussed out (save for the industrial/dnb one) and have a fair amount of room for sonic diversity within them, so it should be some time before any of my projects get stale.  I just need to create, so I’m going to get on that as soon as possible.

I’ll be back on Saturday with a new blog, but I’m going to try to keep the video blog updated every day if possible, so keep checking back!
